Discover the vibrant colours and symbolism of traditional Korean art in this creative pottery painting workshop at Cerdu Studio in Gangnam! In this one-hour, hands-on class, you’ll learn about dancheong, the intricate decorative patterns that adorn traditional Korean architecture, and bring these colourful designs to life on your own ceramic piece.
Often seen on the wooden beams, ceilings, and eaves of Korean palaces, temples, and historic buildings, dancheong is much more than decoration. Its distinctive combinations of red, green, blue, yellow, and white create striking patterns that reflect Korea’s artistic heritage. Traditionally, these designs have served both decorative and protective purposes, while their colours and motifs carry cultural meanings.
Your experience begins with an introduction to the history and visual language of dancheong. With the help of your instructor, you’ll explore traditional motifs, learn about their meanings, and discover how these intricate designs are created. Using pattern templates and visual examples, you’ll then have the chance to experiment with colours and brush techniques as you paint your own ceramic piece.
Whether you prefer to follow a classic Korean pattern or create a more personal interpretation, the workshop encourages you to explore your creativity while connecting with an important part of Korea’s cultural heritage. You can recreate traditional motifs, experiment with different colour combinations, or mix patterns to design something that reflects your own style.
The class is taught in English and is suitable for beginners, so no previous painting experience is necessary. Your instructor will guide you through the process, helping you work with the patterns and colours at your own pace.
Once your painting is complete, the studio team will glaze and kiln-fire your ceramic piece to help preserve your design and give it a finished look. After the firing process is complete, you can collect your artwork from the studio or arrange shipping for an additional fee.
Perfect for art lovers, culture enthusiasts, and travellers looking for a creative activity in Seoul, this workshop offers a memorable way to explore Korean traditional art and create a unique handmade souvenir.
