Discover the beauty of traditional Korean ceramics and create a piece of Korean culture with your own hands! Join a one-hour pottery wheel class at Cerdu Studio in Gangnam and learn how to make a small dalhangari, Korea’s iconic moon jar, known for its softly rounded shape and milky-white appearance.
Inspired by the full moon, traditional Korean moon jars are admired for their simple beauty, natural curves, and understated elegance. Their slightly irregular shapes are part of their charm, reflecting the beauty of imperfection and the character of handmade pottery. During this workshop, you’ll discover the story behind this distinctive ceramic tradition and learn what makes moon jars such a recognisable symbol of Korean craftsmanship.
With guidance from your instructor, you’ll get hands-on experience at the pottery wheel, starting with the basics of working with clay. Learn how to centre the clay, control the wheel, and gradually shape your own small round jar. Your instructor will guide you through each step, making the experience accessible even if you’ve never touched a pottery wheel before. You’ll also have the opportunity to add simple personal touches to make your creation uniquely yours.
The class is taught in English and is designed for complete beginners, so there’s no need to worry about having previous pottery experience. Whether you’re travelling solo, enjoying a creative activity with friends, or looking for a memorable family experience, this workshop offers a relaxing way to slow down and explore Korean artistic traditions beyond the usual sightseeing itinerary.
Before finishing, choose your preferred glaze colour for the final look of your moon jar. Your creation will then be left to dry before the studio team glazes and kiln-fires it, transforming your handmade piece into a finished ceramic keepsake. Once it’s ready, you can collect it from the studio or arrange shipping for an additional fee.
Leave with more than just a souvenir: enjoy the experience of making something from scratch and take home your own handmade interpretation of a traditional Korean moon jar.
Workshop Notice & Guidelines
- Class Duration & Inclusions: The session runs for 1 hour, and the fee includes the firing process for one finished piece.
- Preparation: Please trim your fingernails short before arriving, as long nails can make shaping the clay difficult.
- Alternative Times: If you wish to schedule a session outside of the listed booking hours, please contact us directly.
- Natural Characteristics of Ceramic: Due to the inherent nature of clay and the high-temperature firing process, minor natural variations—such as fine drying cracks, slight warping, natural iron spots, or glaze variations—may occur.
- Photo Notice: Please note that photos or videos of the workshop session and finished pieces may be used for educational and promotional purposes.
