Recycling in Korea: A Practical Waste-Sorting Guide for Visitors

FanWork · 가이드 · Insider Tips, Travel Guide

After a takeaway meal or a few days in a rental apartment, the question is often simple: which bin does this go in? The answer starts with the instructions for your building and local district, not the color of a bag seen in another neighborhood.

Inspired by Unlock Korea’s recycling guide, this article explains a practical approach to sorting. Official Seoul and Gangnam district information was reviewed on October 21, 2026. District examples below are not a nationwide collection schedule.

Start with Your Accommodation’s System

Ask your host or reception where general waste, food waste, and separated recyclables belong. Confirm the permitted disposal time and whether the building uses designated bags, shared containers, or another managed collection system.

If you need to buy a bag, ask for the type accepted at that address. Do not choose by color alone or leave a bag on a random street corner. Bulky items and special waste need their own instructions rather than being added to an ordinary recycling pile.

Prepare Packaging Before You Sort

Empty containers and remove food residue before following the labels at the collection point. Sort materials separately rather than putting a mixed bag of packaging into one recycling bin.

For example, Gangnam’s current guide tells residents to empty and rinse transparent drink and water PET bottles, remove their labels, and reduce their volume. It also specifies separate collection arrangements for these bottles and plastic film in certain housing types. This illustrates why you should check both the material and the local collection system.

The original graphic gives a broad preparation checklist. Follow the district’s item-specific instructions for caps, lids, labels, and mixed materials rather than assuming every container is handled identically.

Food Scraps Are Not All Food Waste

Gangnam’s guide lists animal bones, shellfish shells, hard shells, and tea bags among items that do not belong in its food-waste stream. It also advises removing moisture and keeping other materials out of food waste. Use your own district’s item list when you are unsure; something that came from a meal is not automatically food waste.

Check the Exceptions

Broken glass and ceramics should not be mixed with ordinary recyclable bottles. Gangnam directs such items to its non-combustible-waste system; other districts and buildings may provide different handling instructions. Ask the host or local office before disposing of a sharp, bulky, or unfamiliar item.

A Quick Routine Before Checkout

Read the building notice, identify the material, empty and clean packaging as instructed, and confirm the collection place and time. Keep uncertain items separate until you can ask. This is more reliable than copying an old social-media timetable or assuming the previous accommodation’s rules apply.
