A bus ride can bring Seoul’s streets into your sightseeing day rather than leaving them between subway stops. Unlock Korea’s color-coded introduction is a useful starting point, but color alone is not a route planner: check the bus number, direction, and stop before boarding.
Here is how to turn that first visual clue into a more confident journey, with official visitor information reviewed on October 21, 2026.
What the Colors Tell You
Blue buses form longer trunk routes across Seoul. Green branch buses connect neighborhoods with subway stations and larger bus routes. Yellow circulation buses serve central and sub-central areas, while red rapid buses connect Seoul with the surrounding metropolitan region. Smaller local buses fill neighborhood gaps.
Use these categories to understand a journey, not to assume that every bus of one color goes toward your destination. Check the exact service in a current route planner, especially when crossing the city boundary.
Plan the Stop, Not Just the Color
Before leaving, identify the stop on the correct side of the road and check your destination against the route’s direction. Allow room for traffic and a missed connection rather than planning a tight sightseeing reservation immediately after arrival.
For late outings, look up the actual N-bus route and its timetable. An N prefix identifies Seoul’s night-bus service, but it is not a promise that a bus will run past your accommodation whenever you need it.
Pay and Transfer Carefully
Carry a compatible transportation card and tap it when boarding and leaving. Seoul’s official guidance describes an integrated transfer discount, not a blanket guarantee that every onward ride is free. Distance or a higher base fare can add charges.
The usual transfer window is 30 minutes after tapping off, extended to 60 minutes between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. Same-route and same-vehicle reboarding do not qualify under the standard rules. Check pass coverage separately if you use a special travel pass.
Press the stop bell in time, make space for others to get off, and keep food and drinks secured. A little preparation lets the bus become part of the day’s experience rather than a navigation puzzle.
