Korean Visas Made Simple: A Visual Guide to Study, Work, and Life in Korea

Your Korea Journey Starts with the Right Visa

Planning to study, work, travel or settle in Korea? Start with the purpose of your stay. This visual guide introduces the main categories to help you organize your research before preparing an application.

Start with Your Purpose of Stay

Your main activity is the starting point: a degree program, language study, employment, a short visit or a longer stay with family. The cards below group common visa categories by purpose so you can identify which official guidance to read next.

Student Visas: Degree Study or Language Training?

D-2 covers eligible higher-education study, including degree and exchange programs. D-4-1 is generally the category for Korean-language training.

Clarification to the card: the language-program description under D-2 should not be read as the definition of that category. Match your research to the actual program offered by your institution.

Work Visas: Match the Role to the Category

The card introduces E-2 for foreign-language instruction and E-7 for designated specialized activities. These categories serve different kinds of work.

A job title alone does not determine eligibility. Check the requirements for the specific role, employer and visa subtype before relying on a general overview.

Short-Term Stays: Visiting and Working Holidays

C-3 is a short-term visit category, while H-1 is the working-holiday category for eligible applicants. The right route depends on your nationality and planned activities.

Do not assume a short-term visit permits employment. Check the applicable entry route, authorized activities and length of stay through official guidance.

Family & Longer-Term Residence: Know the Difference

F-4 is an overseas-Korean category, and F-2 is a residence category. Qualifying dependent family members generally look to F-3, subject to the sponsoring holder’s status and the applicable requirements.

Clarification to the card: F-2 and dependent-family status are not interchangeable. Confirm the precise category for your own circumstances.

Before You Apply

Use these cards as a starting point for your research. Confirm your exact visa subtype, nationality rules, permitted activities and required documents with the Korea Visa Portal and the Korean embassy or consulate handling your application. A category name alone does not establish eligibility or permission to work.
